iPhone 17 Pro Loses Fancy Anti-Glare Coating

Apple canceled plans for scratch-resistant anti-reflective screens on iPhone 17 Pro models. The coating process slowed down production lines, making it hard to create enough phones. Current iPhones have fingerprint-resistant coatings that reflect more light than Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra screens. Apple wanted to catch up with Samsung but had to change course because of these issues.

The company needs to make millions of new iPhones each year. Adding the special coating took much longer than expected for each phone. If Apple finds a faster way to apply this coating, we might see it on iPhone 18 models next year. Anti-reflective coating differs from nano-texture glass, which reduces glare but does not eliminate it.

Apple might explore using nano-texture glass instead for the iPhone 17 Pro models. This could work better with their production schedule. The change affects only the Pro versions of upcoming phones. Regular iPhone 17 models were never planned to have this feature.
