iPhone 17 Pro Max runs iPadOS… until Apple shuts it down

A Reddit user named TechExpert2910 has successfully installed iPadOS on an iPhone 17 Pro Max. This modification, achieved through a software exploit, enables the smartphone to provide a desktop-style computing experience when linked to an external monitor. The hack demonstrates that the device's hardware, featuring an A19 Pro chip and 12 gigabytes of RAM, is fully capable of supporting advanced multitasking functions.

The specific vulnerability used for this procedure was present only in iOS 26.1, as Apple subsequently addressed the issue in the iOS 26.2 beta 1 update. The Reddit user speculated that Apple restricts this capability to protect its Mac computer sales from potential competition. This situation highlights a broader functionality, similar to Samsung's DeX system on Android, which turns phones into portable desktops.

Despite the hardware potential of premium iPhones to run demanding games and desktop interfaces, Apple has not officially enabled these features. The company continues to maintain separate software experiences for its different product categories, even as it plans to introduce touchscreens to its MacBook Pro lineup.
