Islamic parties in Bangladesh plan protests for election reform

Three Islamic political organizations announced coordinated protest activities across Bangladesh this month. Islami Andolon Bangladesh and Khelafat Majlish made separate but simultaneous declarations on Monday, demanding the July Charter implementation before the upcoming general elections. The groups also seek proportionate representation systems during voting procedures. Their programs align with Jamaat-e-Islami positions, creating unified opposition against the BNP's resistance to these proposals. Party leader Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim Charmonai accused government officials of prioritizing rapid election schedules while neglecting accountability for previous administration violations.

The organizations plan demonstrations on Thursday in Dhaka, Friday across divisional centers, and on September 26 nationwide. Charmonai warned that conducting elections within the current governmental structures would only restore widespread corruption and misuse of authority. He threatened intensified protests beginning next month should reform measures remain unaddressed. The coalition presents five specific requirements, encompassing charter implementation, electoral system changes, fair competition conditions, the visible prosecution of former leaders, and the prohibition of fourteen allied political entities, including the Jatiya Party, for supporting authoritarian governance.
