Jill Sobule Gone Too Soon After Fatal House Fire

Singer Jill Sobule died in a fire at her Minnesota home. She became famous for her 1995 song about same sex attraction that reached Billboard Top 20 charts despite radio bans. Her manager, John Porter, called her a human rights champion whose music shaped our culture.

Artists shared memories after her death. Actor Carrie Coon said Sobule was special in her online tribute. Tracy Chapman posted an old photo with Sobule from 2001. A Denver show changed into a celebration of her life instead of a performance.

The Colorado native released twelve albums during her thirty-year music career. Her work tackled hard topics like capital punishment and eating disorders. Her songs appeared in popular movies, and she performed with famous musicians. Sobule never planned setlists before shows.

Sobule pioneered fan funding for music when record companies turned away from her projects. In 2008, she raised money directly from listeners. Ten years later, she appeared on The Simpsons TV show. Family members survive her.
