Journalists Demand Galamsey State of Emergency

Ghana Journalists Association wants the government to take stronger action against illegal small-scale mining, called galamsey. They demand that officials cancel Legislative Instrument 2462, which allows mining in forest reserves. The group also asks for emergency rules in certain areas to fight the problem head-on. These steps would help protect valuable forests from destruction.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour praised Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah for his work, but believes more must happen. The association stressed that reporters need better protection when covering environmental stories. They asked the minister to work with media groups right away on new strategies. Such partnerships could help journalists expose environmental damage without facing threats or harm. The association thinks press freedom plays a key role in solving the galamsey crisis.
