Judge Locks Up ULS Boss Over Vulgar Social Media Attacks

A judge named Musa Ssekaana decided to send Isaac Ssemakadde to prison for two years. Ssemakadde leads a group of lawyers in Uganda. He made the judge angry because he wrote mean things about him on the internet. The judge wanted to stop a special meeting where lawyers would pick new people for an important job, which upset Ssemakadde.

Ssemakadde wrote unkind words about the judge on social media. Another lawyer, Hashim Mugisha, told the court that Ssemakadde was being disrespectful. The judge agreed and said these mean comments could make other people act badly toward judges. He worried that people might share private information about judges, which could put them in danger.

The judge felt very hurt by what Ssemakadde wrote. He said these mean words made the court look bad, and he wanted to protect the court's good name. When the judge asked Ssemakadde to come to court and explain himself, he did not show up. This made the judge decide to make his final choice on February 28.

These two people have not liked each other for a long time. In 2022, the same judge sent another lawyer to prison and made him pay a lot of money. Back then, Ssemakadde wrote very mean things about the judge on the internet. The head judge of Uganda asked Ssemakadde to say sorry, but he refused. Another lawyer thinks the head judge should not tell Ssemakadde what to do because judges need to be fair to everyone.
