KAIPTC wraps Accra Initiative project with UNDP, Japan in Accra

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre has completed an 18-month initiative focused on counter-terrorism efforts across West Africa and the Sahel region. Japan's government provided financial backing for this collaborative effort between KAIPTC and the United Nations Development Programme. The project strengthened cooperation among seven Accra Initiative member nations and Nigeria as an observer state. Security forces and civilian organizations participated in training programs designed to combat violent extremism. Officials concluded the program during a final steering committee gathering held in Accra.

Project activities spanned multiple countries through research missions, educational workshops, and high-level diplomatic meetings. Training materials were developed in both English and French to serve diverse regional participants. The Sahel region has experienced alarming increases in terrorist activities, accounting for half of global terrorism fatalities during 2024. Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Yoshimoto praised the initiative's foundation-building achievements for regional stability. UNDP Deputy Representative Shaima Hussein emphasized the urgent need for sustained collaborative security measures across participating nations.
