Kalonzo Dubs Gen Z Revolt Day a National Holiday

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka wants June 25 to become a national holiday for young protesters. He plans to honor Generation Z demonstrators who died during last year's parliament protests. Opposition groups will celebrate the anniversary of youth demonstrations that changed Kenya politics. Parents lost children during police fights but never received government payments. Kalonzo says the country must respect brave young people who demanded change.

Young protesters stormed parliament buildings and set parts on fire during June 2024. Police shot demonstrators after lawmakers passed unpopular tax increases on basic goods. President Ruto called protesters criminals and sent military forces against them. Human rights groups reported at least 60 deaths during the violent confrontations. Ruto later cancelled the finance bill after massive public pressure.

Kalonzo criticized Raila Odinga for joining Ruto's government after youth protests ended. Opposition supporters felt betrayed when their leader accepted government positions. Raila defended his decision and said Ruto approached him first about working together. The veteran politician claimed he wanted to fix health problems and reduce taxes. Kalonzo believes Ruto's recent apology came far later than needed.
