Kalungu officials axed over school funds scandal

Uganda's top anti-corruption official has suspended several district leaders over a money scandal. Inspector General of Government Lady Justice Naluzze Aisha Batala ordered the interdiction of Kalungu District's Chief Administrative Officer, Rose Nalumansi. Three other officials are also barred from work: Chief Finance Officer Ismail Twaha Biggwa, District Education Officer Sylvia Grace Nakanwagi, and Assistant Engineering Officer James Muhangi.

The investigation began after a complaint was made about funds being mishandled for building projects. The money was allocated for fixing and constructing twenty-two schools plus a new district office block. Preliminary findings point to problems with the procurement process, conflicts of interest, and abuse of authority, resulting in poor construction work and financial losses.

The Inspectorate cited constitutional powers allowing it to issue such orders during an inquiry. This move underscores the agency's commitment to holding local governments accountable for their the of public resources. The probe into the alleged mismanagement continues while the officials remain suspended.
