Kamanyola under fire, rebels and army in fierce standoff

Congo government troops and local militia went head-to-head with M23 rebels over Kamanyola, a border town sitting right next to Rwanda that controls major supply routes. The battle heated up fast, and rebels grabbed parts of the town before getting pushed back toward Ngomo after taking heavy casualties. Congolese forces are hanging back tactically but already have some units inside the town limits.

Rwanda shut down the border crossing because it were worried that militia fighters might spill over if they pushed all the way through Kamanyola. Thousands of civilians got stuck trying to flee while gunfire and mortars went off around them. The whole thing went down right before a peace deal was supposed to get signed in Washington, which Congo already said won't mean anything unless Rwandan forces pull out completely.
