Kenya Deputy Police Chief Questioned Over Custody Death

Kenya's Deputy Police Chief Eliud Lagat spent over three hours answering questions at the police watchdog office Thursday. Officials grilled him about teacher Albert Ojwang who died June 7 inside a Nairobi police station. Lagat brought his lawyer and stayed calm during the tough questioning session. Investigators will review his statement before deciding what happens next. He had complained earlier about social media posts that hurt his reputation.

Twenty police officers have given statements about Ojwang's death case. Two officers already face charges and sit in jail for two weeks during the investigation. A deputy station commander was arrested Tuesday and taken to court before going to another police station. Four other people connected to the case also appeared in court and were locked up for 14 days.

The police oversight group wants phone records from Lagat and other officers involved. They seized security camera footage from the police station and sent biological evidence to government labs for testing. Officials promise to finish their investigation file with recommendations early next week. They warn that anyone found guilty will face prosecution regardless of their rank or position.
