NAIROBI, Kenya — Busia Senator Okiyah Omtatah was arrested on Monday. He was protesting in Nairobi. He wants the government to find missing young people.
Mr. Omtatah and other protesters were taken to the Central Police Station and put in a cell together. The protesters sang a freedom song. They did not want anyone to be questioned alone.
The police tried to take one protester out of the room. But the others blocked them. "No one is going to be taken away," they said.
Mr. Omtatah said the police broke the law by stopping a legal protest. "We cannot cooperate with anybody," he told the police.
He warned the protesters not to share their IDs if questioned. The group chanted, "Implement the constitution." Then, they sang Kenya's national anthem.
Earlier, Mr. Omtatah filed a court case. He wants the police to find the missing Kenyans. He named seven people who had disappeared.
Protests also happened in other Kenyan cities. In Eldoret, Reuben Kigame was briefly arrested. He is a former candidate for president. In Mombasa, activists met with police. The police said no one was missing there. The protest was canceled.
