PLU Threatens Protest Over Muhoozi Media Coverage

Patriots from the Patriotic League of Uganda have shared their intentions to hold a protest at the Kenya diplomatic office in Kampala. The demonstration is scheduled for next week due to perceived negative press coverage of Defense Forces Chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. General Muhoozi serves as both the leader of this civic group and happens to be the son of President Museveni. The organization operates as a separate entity within the structure of the National Resistance Movement ruling party.

Recent developments include growing demonstrations across Kenya regarding Dr. Kizza Besigye, who was taken from Nairobi in November, with Kenyan authorities aware of the situation. The Standard newspaper from Kenya published a February 28 front page featuring General Muhoozi with the headline Four-Star Brat alongside several photographs showing him dressed in military uniform. Additional content included information about his background and referenced various statements he made on the social platform X.

Kasambya County representative Daudi Kabanda expressed frustration about the newspaper coverage. As general secretary of PLU, he announced Wednesday as the date for what he described as an energetic demonstration. He referenced previous incidents when Kenyan protesters burned the Ugandan embassy yet received no response, stating that insulting their chairman would result in a significant reaction from supporters.

General Muhoozi posted a brief message on social media featuring just seven words about the Uganda House burning last year in Nairobi. The post included an image showing the Ugandan diplomatic building engulfed in flames during previous youth protests in Kenya. This represents a more restrained communication style compared to past statements where he suggested military action against Nairobi.

Youth and Children Affairs Minister Balaam Barugahara responded strongly to General Muhoozi. He expressed opposition to any disrespect directed at national sovereignty and pledged complete backing for the general. The situation connects to ongoing tensions regarding Dr. Besigye, who has challenged President Museveni in four presidential elections and faces serious legal charges.

Dr. Besigye initially faced military court accusations of treachery and illegal firearm possession. Following a Supreme Court decision in January that declared military tribunals unlawful, civilian courts charged him with treason and misprision of treason. Despite these legal developments, he remains held at Luzira Prison.
