Kenya's Job Quality Crisis - World Bank Scores Below 1.9

World Bank Says Kenya's Jobs Need Work.

A new World Bank study shows that Kenya has a big problem. Most jobs there are bad. People earn little money, get few benefits, and feel their work is shaky.

The Bank rated jobs from 0 to 4 points. Kenya scored less than 1.9, which is quite poor. The score looks at four things: pay, benefits, job safety, and steady work.

The numbers tell a sad story. Pay rates gained just half a point. Job benefits and steady work each earned a quarter point, and worker happiness also scored a quarter point.

Benefits matter here. Good jobs should give workers health care, pensions, and paid time off. They need these things when times get rough.

Steady work means having a real contract. It means keeping your job for years. It means working at places that follow the rules.

Some people have it worse than others. Women struggle more than men to find good jobs. Young folks face bigger hurdles. Rural workers see fewer chances. People with less school find fewer good jobs.

The school makes a huge difference. High school grads score 30% better than those who only finished grade school. College grads beat high school grads by 26%. They beat grade school grads by 63%.

The type of work matters. Banks offer better jobs. Government work pays well. Power companies treat workers right. These places give good benefits. They keep people on for years.

Farm work ranks at the bottom, and building jobs fare poorly. Farm hands make little money, and their jobs come and go. Construction workers lack benefits, and their work stops and starts.

The Bank wants things fixed. It says Kenya must improve jobs. Workers need more money, health care and pensions, and steady work they can count on.

Kenya's leaders face a choice. They can leave things as they are, or they can fight for better jobs. Right now, the jobs hurt the poor most. The Bank thinks that must change.
