Khama alleges Mnangagwa plots his death

Wild twist: a former Botswana leader says the biggest danger may be coming from across the border, after he says two sources warned him about a possible plan to kill him.

Seretse Khama Ian Khama linked the warning to an alleged visit by a senior Zimbabwe intelligence official to Botswana, where he believes discussions about targeting him happened. He says his criticism of Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule and Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 of 2026 put him in the crosshairs.

Khama also argued the constitutional change helps Mnangagwa stay in power beyond his current term, calling it a move built around one person rather than Zimbabwean voters. He pointed to election concerns and pressure on opposition groups as patterns used by similar governments.

The former Botswana president has challenged Zimbabwe’s leadership before, after giving shelter to Morgan Tsvangirai during a period of political tension.
