Kidnapping in Okuta, Kwara leaves victim, vigilante, gunman dead

Armed men attacked a businessman's home Sunday night in Kwara State, sparking a deadly rescue attempt that left three people dead. The gunmen stormed Alhaji Dauda Ismaila's residence around 10 PM in Okuta community within Baruten Local Government Area. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots as the attackers created panic before taking Ismaila into nearby forests. Local security volunteers quickly organized a chase operation to save the kidnapped victim. The pursuit led to a fierce gun battle between vigilantes and the criminal group.

The shootout resulted in three deaths during the rescue effort. One suspected kidnapper died from gunfire during the forest confrontation. Ismaila also lost his life in the crossfire between both groups. A vigilante member participating in the rescue mission was killed during the operation. Security officials believe the dead kidnapper was of Fulani background based on his appearance.

Ismaila operated as a respected businessman and farmer who helped the local economy grow. Community members described him as hardworking and generous toward others. His death represents a major loss for Okuta residents who valued his contributions. The incident adds to rising kidnapping cases affecting the region. Three weeks earlier, criminals took another victim from nearby Shiya community who was freed after ransom payment.

Residents report kidnappings occur every three to four weeks in their area. February saw an unsuccessful kidnapping attempt on Alhaji Fatai Olowogbo who later died from injuries. Community leaders demand stronger government security measures. Families live in constant fear as authorities pursue remaining criminals.
