Kigongo urges Jinja independents to back NRM flagbearers

National Resistance Movement Vice Chairperson Moses Kigongo has urged independent candidates aligned with the ruling party in Jinja City to withdraw their bids and support official flagbearers before the 2026 general elections. Speaking at a Saturday meeting with village leaders in Buwekula, Jinja Northern Division, Kigongo acknowledged irregularities in recent party primaries but emphasized that forgiveness and party unity would strengthen electoral prospects in the Busoga subregion.

Presidential aide Faruk Kirunda attended the gathering and criticized residents for electing three opposition legislators in previous polls, which he said weakened local representation at the national level. Party rules do not recognize independent candidacies, meaning only endorsed nominees will receive institutional backing during campaigns.

Kigongo commended Aminah Mirembe for publicly announcing her withdrawal from the Mafubira Northern Division councillor race to support the designated party candidate. Kirunda explained that construction delays on Ambercourt and Mbulambuti roads resulted from inflated compensation demands by landowners who acquired properties after learning of planned government infrastructure work.
