Kiteezi Fire Ignites Fears of Methane Bomb Explosion

A dangerous fire started at the Kiteezi dumpsite last Saturday. The fire came from deep under the ground, where a gas called methane burned. People knew this might happen because the dumpsite had had many problems before.

The firefighters worked hard but needed special dirt instead of water to stop the flames. The city office did not have the right tools to put dirt on the fire, and many people were angry about this.

A man named John Kikonyogo from a group called FDC said the government made big mistakes. He warned everyone that the fire could cause a huge explosion like a volcano if nobody fixed it fast. The dumpsite closed last year after a bad accident killed people on August 9, 2024.

Mr. Kikonyogo wants the government to help the families who lost their loved ones. He said they need more money than the small amount of 2 million shillings they were offered. Many families feel scared and want to stay in their homes until they receive fair payment.

The FDC wants better plans for handling trash in the future. Mr. Kikonyogo said other places should not face the same problems as Kiteezi. People want the government to make changes fast and keep everyone safe. The firefighters keep working to put out the flames as many people ask the government to make better rules about trash.
