Liam Dawson returns after eight years as England recall spinner for Old Trafford Test

England selects Liam Dawson for the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford after an eight-year absence from international cricket. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner enters the squad following Shoaib Bashir's finger fracture sustained during the Lord's Test. Bashir required surgery with wire insertion in his left pinkie after bowling through pain to secure England's series-leading victory.

Dawson last represented England in Test cricket during July 2017 against South Africa before his recent T20I recall this summer. His domestic performance since 2021 features 12 five-wicket hauls from 15 career achievements plus nine centuries. The all-rounder earned the PCA Men's Player of the Year award for his 2024 campaign excellence.

Captain Harry Brook praised Dawson's experience and competitive nature while highlighting his potential effectiveness against left-handed batters. England maintains an unchanged lineup elsewhere with Jamie Smith continuing as wicketkeeper. The team seeks a series victory in Manchester.
