Muhammad Luwemba will run for the Kawempe North MP seat. The position was left open after the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya.
Luwemba was Ssegirinya's longtime aide. He changed his name from Alex Lusswa Luwemba to Muhammad Luwemba. This was done to honor Ssegirinya.
Luwemba's academic records still use his old name, but his ID card shows his new name. He gave a copy of the name change document to the NUP Electoral Committee.
Ssegirinya's family backs Luwemba as his political successor. They say Luwemba was closest to the late MP and believes he knows what Kawempe North needs.
Ssegirinya's mother said Luwemba would keep working for the people. She thinks he will continue her son's legacy.
NUP has approved eight candidates for the party flag, one of whom is Lawyer Elias Nalukola Luyimbazi.
Some aspirants had issues with their applications. Kulya Saulo Zziwa was rejected due to document problems. Salim Serunkuma was initially turned away for not having a formal letter.
NUP will announce the official flag bearer on February 5. Ssegirinya died on January 9, 2025, at age 39. He had brain failure and multiple organ collapse.
The election to replace Ssegirinya will be held on March 13.
