Mahama Declares All Out War on Galamsey

At his May Day speech, President Mahama promised to keep fighting illegal mining. He told the crowd at Independence Square that the army would continue working against people harming forests and water. The president said he knew four months was not enough time to fix this difficult problem that threatens Ghana.

Ghana Gold Board leader Sammy Gyamfi announced plans to cancel Law LI 2462 completely. The government first considered changing the law to stop presidents from allowing mining in forest areas, but they worried that removing it might create legal problems. Many groups called the law dangerous and pushed for its removal instead of changes.
