Makerere University started a new program to teach students about modern technology and business skills. The school worked with Lwera Electronics company and the United Nations to create the Industry 4.0 Enterprise Development Programme. Fifteen students will join the first group of learners. Five graduates will become teachers after finishing their training. The program helps students learn electronics manufacturing and how to start their companies.
Professor Buyinza Mukadasi spoke at the launch event for the Vice Chancellor. He said young people need new skills for the fourth industrial revolution. Uganda has many young citizens who must learn modern technology to find jobs. The professor praised the partnership between the university and development organizations. He believes students need practical abilities beyond traditional education subjects.
Science Minister Monica Musenero explained that Africa cannot fall behind during this technology revolution. She said the fourth industrial revolution uses artificial intelligence and robotics to change how people work. The global market for these technologies was worth 20 trillion dollars during 2021. Uganda wants to build its economy and compete with other countries. The minister believes the country should create its unique technology centers rather than copy other places.
