Makerere University taps Sarah Ssali, the second woman in a century

Makerere University has named Prof. Sarah Ssali to serve as First Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Chancellor Dr. Crispus Kiyonga made this historic appointment based on recommendations from the University Council and Senate. Prof. Ssali becomes the second woman to assume this leadership role during the institution's century-long existence. She takes over responsibilities from Prof. Umar Kakumba, who completed his term in 2024. Her duties will encompass overseeing academic administration and policy development at Uganda's largest public university.

Prof. Ssali brings extensive academic credentials to her new position. She earned her PhD in International Health Studies from Queen Margaret University in Scotland and holds advanced degrees in Gender Studies and Social Sciences from Makerere University. Her research focuses on health policy, gender issues, HIV/AIDS, and social protection programs. She previously led the School of Women and Gender Studies as Dean. Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza, who later became a Supreme Court Justice, was the first woman to hold this deputy vice-chancellor position.
