Makeup Artist Jailed for Throwing Naira at Wedding

A court in Nigeria put a famous makeup artist behind bars Monday. He must stay in jail for six months because he threw money at his wedding party. The man goes by the name Amuscap, but his real name is Abdullahi Musa Huseini. During his December wedding celebrations, he threw one hundred bills worth 1,000 naira each, totaling about $63.

Nigerian law says nobody can harm or misuse the national money. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has enforced this rule since 2007. They said Amuscap damaged the value of these notes by throwing them around. Many people at Nigerian parties throw cash over happy couples when they dance. This happens all the time at weddings across the country.

The government has started going after famous people who break this law. Last year, they locked up a transgender woman called Bobrisky for the same reason. She spent six months in jail after throwing money at a movie opening. Another case involved actor Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, who went to jail when someone filmed her throwing bills and stepping on them.

Some people feel the government only enforces this rule against celebrities. The practice happens at countless events, but regular people rarely face punishment. The northern city of Kano hosted the trial, where judges decided Amuscap deserved prison time. The anti-corruption agency announced his punishment through an official statement.

Many Nigerians continue this tradition despite knowing about the law. When the bride and groom dance, guests often show their happiness by showering them with naira notes. The practice remains deeply connected to celebration culture throughout Nigeria, even though officials have made clear efforts to stop it through these high-profile cases.
