Malaysia and ASEAN push UN Security Council veto reform over Gaza stalemate

Malaysia leads ASEAN member nations in demanding changes to United Nations Security Council veto authority. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced the reform initiative during parliamentary questioning Tuesday. The five permanent members China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States currently block Gaza-related measures despite General Assembly approval. Parliamentary representative Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman prompted the discussion about diplomatic responses to recent ASEAN-GCC Summit outcomes. Malaysian officials view veto power restrictions as necessary for effective international governance.

The ASEAN-GCC Summit produced Malaysia's first successful joint Gaza statement through diplomatic efforts. Previous attempts failed to unite ASEAN countries on Palestinian issues. Malaysia expanded discussions with Japan and Korea regarding Gaza humanitarian concerns. The foreign minister emphasized building partnerships with nations sharing similar positions on Gaza. Malaysian diplomacy actively pursues consistent international advocacy for Palestinian rights through multilateral frameworks.
