Mauritania launches national e-commerce strategy workshop to boost digital economy

Mauritania launched efforts to create a national e-commerce strategy during a workshop held in Nouakchott. The Ministry of Digital Transformation, Innovation, and Modernization of Administration organized the event with help from Germany's international cooperation agency. Secretary-General Khaled Wald Abedin Sidi opened the meeting and explained the ministry's role in supporting digital changes across government departments. Officials from the Ministry of Trade and Tourism joined the planning process through a joint committee. The group has worked together since starting the Mauritania e-commerce readiness study.

Leaders presented their research findings at a United Nations conference in Geneva during December 2023. The new strategy will bring both formal and informal businesses into the country's economic system. President Mohammed Ibnud Sheikh Al-Ghazwani wants to build a strong digital economy for Mauritania. Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djay provided direction for the project. German Ambassador Florian Rendel spoke about how online commerce creates jobs for women and young people.

The diplomat also mentioned that e-commerce attracts companies to invest in new technologies. Government officials from multiple agencies attended the workshop launch. Private sector representatives also participated in the discussions. Business leaders and ministry executives joined the opening ceremony. The workshop represents an important step toward making Mauritania's economy more inclusive and active through digital tools.
