Miners group abandons galamsey suspect Kojo Peprah in Ghana

Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners fired back at media outlets Friday after reports falsely connected them to a suspect caught interfering with police operations. The group slammed viral stories claiming Kojo Peprah represented their organization when authorities nabbed him during an anti-mining raid. General Secretary Godwin Nickleson Amark put his name on a public disclaimer shooting down any ties between Peprah and their association. The mining group made clear that Peprah never held leadership roles or membership within their ranks. Association officials stressed they maintain strict standards for who speaks on their behalf.

Police grabbed Peprah at Desiri Forest Reserve on July 10 while conducting sweeps against illegal mining operations in Ahafo Ano North District. The arrest triggered widespread confusion after social media posts suggested he worked for the small-scale miners group during the incident. GNASSM leaders moved quickly to distance themselves from the arrested man and clarify their actual leadership structure. The association emphasized their ongoing cooperation with government forces fighting illegal mining across Ghana. Officials urged journalists to contact Abdul-Razak Alhassan, their National Director of Communications, for accurate information.

The mining group highlighted their commitment to working alongside authorities rather than against enforcement efforts. GNASSM representatives called for public support of government initiatives targeting illegal mining operations throughout the country. The association warned media outlets to check facts before publishing stories about sensitive mining issues. Their statement comes as officials ramp up crackdowns on illegal mining activities causing environmental damage nationwide. The group positioned itself as a partner helping combat the illegal mining problem rather than an obstacle to enforcement.
