Minister calls for police probe into pit drownings

The Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, wants police to look into how two kids drowned in an uncovered mining hole. Thirteen-year-old Twenefuo Koranteng and ten-year-old Kwaku Antwi died swimming in a pit left open by miners who never fixed the land they dug up. The tragedy happened at Akyem Abompe in the Fanteakwa South district, leaving local people heartbroken and scared. The children were swimming with two friends when they drowned.

Mrs. Awatey feels very sad for the families who lost their children. She said police must act fast and question the people who ran those illegal mining sites. She thinks mining should create jobs, not kill innocent kids and hurt families. The minister called this accident a clear warning about how dangerous illegal mining can be for everyone living nearby.

According to the minister, anyone caught running illegal mines will face tough punishments, including losing their mining permits. She promised to fight harder against illegal mining and asked the Regional Mining Task Force to step up its work. Mrs. Awatey ordered police to arrest and charge people who break Ghana's mining rules because the law must be followed.

These open mining pits create major safety problems for communities, especially for children who play near them. This death adds to many others linked to illegal mining, showing why Ghana needs better enforcement of mining laws and proper land recovery practices. Many people want stricter rules to stop more deaths and ask mining companies to make safety their top concern when they dig for gold and minerals.
