Mozambique started a major water cleanup plan on Wednesday. The Public Works team met in Maputo to kick off this $27 million project. Money comes from the African Bank to help fix dirty water problems in three cities in the middle and north of the country, where many people need better pipes and drains.
Hélio Banze, from the government, told everyone that Chimoio would see changes first. About 190,000 people who live there will soon have cleaner water. The old pipes cannot handle all the waste anymore. People often catch diseases from the bad water that flows through town. Jobs will open up as workers build new systems throughout the city streets.
Most of the cash—around $20 million—will pay for the main cleaning plant. Workers will lay down 76 kilometers of fresh pipes under the streets and build two pump houses to push water through these new lines. All these parts work together to keep the town healthy and safe for families.
Adamo Gonçalves spoke for Chimoio city leaders at the meeting. He is happy that young adults will find work during the construction. When finished, everyone living there should enjoy healthier lives with less sickness. Clean water makes daily life much better for all the families across town.
