Missing witnesses stall senior officer trafficking trial

Lawyers cannot find important people who need to speak in court about police officer Gilbert Arinaitwe Bwana. The main person hurt in this case has gone missing. Joseph Kyomuhendo told Judge Alice Komuhangi Khauka about this problem on Monday. He asked for more time to search for these missing people and wanted to talk with Jane Frances Abodo about what to do next. Judge Komuhangi agreed to delay until April 22, 2025. She made clear that everyone must be ready on that day.

The court decided last December that enough proof existed to make Bwana face trial. Judge Andrew Bashaija looked at the evidence and said the case should go forward. Lawyers claim Bwana tricked a woman from Mbarara with false promises of housework in Kampala. When she arrived, they said he forced her to have sex many times. He threatened her with a gun, kept her locked up with little food, and never paid her any money. They believe he used his job as a police officer to scare her into doing what he wanted.

Doctors checked the woman and found signs that matched her story. Her body showed old injuries and places where she had been hurt. Her aunt Agnes Katushabe helped connect some facts. She talked about a woman who helped arrange the job and sent 40,000 shillings for bus travel. Many people already know about Bwana from past events. He became famous in 2011 when he sprayed pepper at Dr. Kizza Besigye during protests. Bwana also faced trouble for hurting someone in his family back in 2015.

The current charge against him comes with serious punishment. If the court says he did these things, he could stay in prison for his entire life. Police found out the woman told her friend about what happened. She said Bwana raped her repeatedly, starved her, and never gave her wages for working. This friend told a local security person who helped rescue the woman. Together, they went to Nateete police station where she reported everything that happened.

Right now, the woman is staying somewhere safe. Police say a private helping group keeps her protected. They hide her location to make sure nobody can harm her. The court will meet again next month to decide what happens next with this serious case. Everyone involved must prepare completely before that important date arrives.
