President Calls for Unity at Historic African Summit on DRC Crisis.
Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed a landmark joint summit between the Southern African Development Community and East African Community in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, focusing on peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Speaking to regional leaders, Mnangagwa emphasized the need for decisive action to address escalating conflicts in eastern DRC. He highlighted how ongoing instability and growing hostilities affect not just the DRC but impact the entire African continent.
The President thanked Tanzanian leader Dr. Samir Hassan and Kenyan President William Ruto for their leadership roles in convening the urgent meeting. He praised the preparatory work of regional secretariats and ministers in laying the groundwork for the discussions.
Mnangagwa paid tribute to peacekeepers who lost their lives serving in the DRC, extending condolences to their families and communities. He acknowledged the civilian casualties and displacement caused by insurgent activities in the eastern regions.
The Zimbabwean leader drew parallels between current unity needs and past solidarity during Africa's independence struggles. He called for comprehensive solutions to peace and security challenges and urged leaders to approach discussions with openness and honesty.
The summit aims to create a concrete roadmap for resolving the DRC crisis, building on progress made through previous peace initiatives, including the Rwanda and Nairobi processes. Mnangagwa stressed that the interests of DRC citizens must remain central to all deliberations.
According to Mnangagwa, SADC maintains its commitment to supporting peace efforts. He concluded by reminding fellow leaders of their responsibility to meet the hopes of regional citizens who count on their leadership to establish lasting stability in the DRC.
