Angry people at a funeral killed a police officer on Sunday. This happened in Ibanda District during the burial of Lazarus Kahangire. The dead man had been locked up at Nyabuhikye Prison before he passed away. Officer Suleiman Chemonges came to watch over the funeral. He served at Bisheshe Police Station as part of his normal job.
The 28-year-old officer arrived early before his team showed up. Family members attacked him right away when he came alone. They blamed the police for causing the death of their loved one behind bars. Kahangire stayed in jail because of attempted murder charges. His case linked back to land fights between Vincent Mbabazi and his brothers.
Police teams rushed to help after the attack happened. They found the dead officer plus his gun at the scene. The weapon had sixteen bullets still inside it. Officers took their dead friend to Ruhoko Health Centre. Doctors plan to check his body to learn exactly how he died during the attack.
Mr. Kasasira leads police in the Rwizi Region. He told reporters they are still looking into what happened that day. The case shows how angry people can become when someone dies in prison. Land fights often cause deep problems between families in Uganda. The officer simply did his job that morning when the crowd turned against him.
The mob thought police had hurt Kahangire during his jail time. This made them target any officer who showed up that day. Sadly, Suleiman became the victim of their rage. Police must protect funerals yet face danger from upset crowds. The case file number IBD CRB 849/2023 holds the history of why Kahangire went to prison before his death.
