Modi opens Navi Mumbai airport, metro line

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reaffirmed his government’s plan to strengthen Mumbai’s infrastructure and improve the Ease of Living as he prepared to inaugurate Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Mumbai Metro Line 3. The airport, developed at a cost of about Rs 19,650 crore under a public-private partnership, will serve as the region’s second international airport, easing congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Built across 1,160 hectares, the facility is designed to handle 90 million passengers and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo each year. It features an Automated People Mover system linking four terminals and sustainable elements such as solar power generation, storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, and electric transport services.

The Prime Minister will also open Phase 2B of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, developed at a cost of Rs 12,200 crore. With this, the entire Aqua Line, valued at more than Rs 37,270 crore, will become fully operational, marking a significant step in Mumbai’s urban transit network.
