Morogoro Road gets a gravel glow-up to tackle truck traffic

They're fixing the old highway to deal with all those trucks. TANROADS Coast Regional Manager Baraka Mwambage announced the rehabilitation of a 66-kilometer stretch of the original Morogoro Road on the Coast Region side. The work, costing 6.8 billion shillings, aims to cut congestion ahead of a planned expressway between Mailimoja and Morogoro. This key corridor from Dar es Salaam to Tunduma sees nearly 30,000 vehicles daily near Kibaha, with over 9,700 being heavy lorries.

The project, currently 20 percent complete, involves grading and graveling the road. Crews have already shaped 27.6 kilometers from Kibaha Mailimoja to Ruvu Ranch and laid gravel on a 2.7-kilometer section. They have also installed multiple culverts. Officials expect the rehabilitation to finish by March of next year, providing an alternate route to ease pressure from the heavy traffic linking Tanzania's regions and neighboring countries.
