Moscow-St. Petersburg High-Speed Rail Project Moves Forward

Transport officials work hard to finish plans for Russia's first bullet train line. The project will link Moscow and St. Petersburg with stops in several regions between the two major cities. Government experts must approve the final blueprints before workers can start building the 679-kilometer railway.

Transport Minister Roman Starovoit says his team waits for construction permits from state reviewers. The high-speed rail fits into Russia's national transport improvement program. Design teams from multiple companies put together detailed plans for the massive undertaking.

St. Petersburg's governor announced that local construction will begin next year. Workers will build new train stations and passenger terminals around the city. The Obukhovo transport hub and Volkovskaya station will handle trains heading toward Moscow and other destinations.

Regional leaders met to discuss money for the project and partnership deals with private companies. Governor Alexander Beglov wants federal support for the city's portion of the railway network. Officials hope to finish the entire system by 2028.

The bullet train will cost about 2.1 trillion rubles to complete. Passengers will travel between Russia's two biggest cities much faster than current trains allow. The railway will boost economic growth in all regions along the route.
