Mount Mulanje Porters Race set for July 12 with 500 runners

Organizers have set July 12, 2025 as the date for the Mount Mulanje Porters' Race at Likhubula Valley. The annual event expects hundreds of runners from Malawi and other countries to compete. Jimmy Maloya serves as Communications Officer for the organizing committee and confirmed preparations have started. Registration has opened for athletes who want to participate. Officials predict more than 500 people will join the race.

Runners will face a challenging 25-kilometer course from Chambe Plateau to Lichenya Plateau before returning to Likhubula. The Fun Run offers a shorter 10-kilometer distance for other participants. Organizers need K55 million to fund the event and are asking businesses for sponsorship money. Corporate support will help make the race successful and memorable for all athletes. The committee wants to ensure every detail runs smoothly.

Last year brought approximately 350 runners to the mountain race. Officials expect growth this year because foreign athletes plan to compete and public interest has increased. The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority continues as the main sponsor for the event. The race serves two purposes for the community and environment. Money raised helps protect Mount Mulanje, which ranks among Malawi's most important natural treasures.
