MSI BIOS Breakthrough Lets 256GB RAM Hit 6400MTs

MSI released new BIOS software for 800-series motherboards that improves memory support. The AGESA Combo PI-1.2.0.3e update works with all AM5 motherboards from both 800 and 600 series chipsets. Entry-level A620 chipset boards can also download the latest update from MSI. Computer builders can install four 64GB memory sticks for 256GB total capacity. The motherboards run this large memory configuration at 6000 MT/s speeds with better stability.

MSI tested memory modules from Micron, Hynix and Samsung companies successfully. Some high-end motherboards can push memory speeds up to 6400 MT/s with all slots filled. The MAG B850M MORTAR Wi-Fi board ran 256GB memory at 6400 MT/s with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. Memory timings reached CL36-44-44-96 during testing without system crashes. Higher-end motherboard models should achieve even better performance and stability.

The BIOS update adds support for a mystery AMD processor that MSI did not name. Tech experts believe the new chip could be the AMD Ryzen 7 9700F processor. This CPU lacks integrated graphics unlike other 9000 series processors from AMD. The BIOS might also prepare systems for upcoming Ryzen 9000G processors with graphics. MSI customers can download the update from company websites for their compatible motherboards.
