MTAKUWWA progress highlighted at Ruvuma event

Tanzania has intensified efforts to protect women and children through MTAKUWWA, the National Action Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children, which coordinates government ministries and civil organizations to reduce abuse by 50 percent. The Prime Minister's Office oversees the program, which establishes protective networks at national, regional and local levels while training committees to prevent violence, monitor cases and improve reporting systems.

Ruvuma Region exemplifies the program's impact through the Ruvuma Orphanage Association, where Executive Director Matthew Ngalimanayo emphasized early childhood education alongside violence prevention during a graduation ceremony at Cheers Daycare Center in Mahenge, Songea Municipality. The facility expanded from two students to 30 within a year, graduating 16 children despite facing space and resource constraints.

Officials stressed responsive parenting as essential to child development, noting that brain capacity reaches 90 percent by age six. Community leaders, including Pastor Elimu Bernard Mwenzegule and Social Welfare Officer Edda Venant Komba, urged parents to discipline with dignity while modeling respectful behavior, as children learn primarily through observation rather than instruction.
