Robert Mugabe Junior was arrested on Tuesday in Harare after officers allegedly discovered drugs in his possession. Police found two sachets of dagga and a substance suspected to be cocaine hidden among cash carried by the 33-year-old son of the late former president. He was detained at Harare Central Police Station by the Drugs and Narcotics section and appeared in court on Wednesday.
The arrest marks another legal setback for Mugabe Junior, who faced charges in February 2023 for property damage and assaulting an officer at a party. His younger brother Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe was arrested on July 1 over allegations of leading an armed attack on mine workers near the family estate in Mazowe. Observers noted such arrests would have been improbable when their father held the presidency.
