Munetsi Breaks Record with 20m Move to Wolves

Zimbabwean Star Makes Record Transfer to English Premier League.

Marshall Munetsi joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday in a €20 million deal, setting a new transfer record for Zimbabwean players abroad.

The move surpasses Tino Kadewere's €15 million transfer to Lyon in 2020. Munetsi completed his medical after both clubs agreed to terms, joining former Reims teammate Emmanuel Agbadou at Wolves.

The price marks a sharp rise for the midfielder, who was valued at €5 million just two years ago. Wolves targeted Munetsi to strengthen their squad after struggling in the league this season.

He joins fellow Zimbabweans Tawanda Chirewa and Leon Chiwome at the club. Chirewa returned from a loan spell at Derby County in January 2025 due to injuries.

Munetsi replaces Mario Lemina, who left for Galatasaray in a €2.5 million deal. The 31-year-old Lemina served as club captain but faced performance issues in recent months.

Stats show Munetsi ranks among Europe's top midfielders, winning 2.10 aerial duels per match. Analysts compare his style to Premier League players Tomas Soucek, Joelinton, Ryan Yates, and Mikel Merino.

The 26-year-old started at Ali Sundowns Academy in Mabvuku, Zimbabwe. He played for Blue Rangers before moving to South Africa's FC Cape Town in 2015. Orlando Pirates signed him next year, leading to his Reims transfer in 2019.

At Reims, Munetsi appeared in 21 games this season. His consistent play earned him a contract extension through 2026. The move to Wolves puts another Zimbabwean player in England's top league.
