Muranga vendor shot by police during protests, family seeks govt help

A young man named Boniface Kariuki lies hurt at Kenyatta National Hospital after police shot him during protests last Tuesday. The 22-year-old vendor helped his family make money before this happened. His grandfather George Irungu says the family cannot pay for medical care without help. Doctors say Kariuki remains very sick and needs expensive treatment. The shooting left his relatives scared about how they will survive without his income.

Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi came to visit the family at their home in Karugia village. He brought other officers to show they care about what happened to Kariuki. The grandfather told Ndanyi that government workers caused this problem and should fix it. Local leader Moses Muchiri says hospital bills have already cost more than one million shillings. The family begs anyone who can help to come forward and support them.

Ndanyi said police want to work better with communities and build trust again. He explained that bad officers get removed from their jobs when they do wrong things. The two officers who shot Kariuki must face judges in court for their actions. Police also work with oversight groups to make sure justice happens fairly. Ndanyi said most officers serve Kenya with honor and respect.

The commander told the family he feels sorry about what happened to their son. He promised police will keep trying to stop these kinds of terrible events. Better training and stronger rules should prevent future shootings of innocent people.
