Museveni fires up Kiira car plant in Jinja

President Yoweri Museveni opened Africa's largest automotive manufacturing facility at Jinja yesterday. The Kiira Vehicle Plant represents a $120 million investment spanning five years of construction from 2019 through 2024. Manufacturing operations began in March 2025 with the facility employing hundreds of Ugandan engineers. The plant addresses Uganda's vehicle import costs while strengthening the national economy.

Museveni emphasized the facility's potential to reduce $800 million in annual vehicle imports. The government plans accelerated iron ore exploration to supply high-quality steel for manufacturing operations. Uganda currently spends $900 million yearly importing steel products. Local steel production will support the automotive industry and reduce trade deficits.

Kiira Motors Corporation has completed 37 electric vehicles and 27 diesel coaches since production started. The company targets 2,500 vehicles for medium-term output and 10,000 annual units by 2030.
