Museveni Hypes MTN Uganda as Digital Gold Mine

President Museveni met MTN Group leaders at State House yesterday. He recalled when Nelson Mandela called him on a small phone years ago as MTN started operations. The president said MTN has grown well since coming to Uganda. He told the group that people need jobs before they can buy phones or use services.

Museveni asked MTN to help with trade between African nations. He talked about how Uganda changed from having only 4% of people using money in 1962 to 64% today. Coffee farms making 9 million bags show people have joined the money economy. The president wants families to keep property together rather than split it when someone dies.

MTN Group Chairman Jonas Mcebisi thanked Uganda for the government's good support. He said MTN plans to stay in Uganda for many years. The company serves about 22 million Ugandan customers, 12 million of whom use smartphones. MTN has 297 million customers worldwide. Several ministers and officials also attended the meeting.
