President Museveni spoke at a special event today about his friend Eriya Kategaya. He called Kategaya the first person who pushed for loving Uganda above everything else in politics. Kategaya worked as the First Deputy Prime Minister and handled East African Community Affairs until he passed away on March 2, 2013, exactly twelve years ago. Museveni brought his wife Janet along to the ceremony at Kololo.

Back during the sixties, Kategaya noticed big problems with political parties UPC, DP and Kabaka Yekka because they focused on identity instead of nation. They tried warning others, but nobody listened, which led to trouble when Amin took over in 1971.
The president asked people running events to notice what makes each person special. He mentioned that Kategaya brought many helpful connections nobody else knew about. Museveni explained that good leaders focus on clear goals rather than themselves. When you work toward specific aims, everything becomes easier than just thinking about personal gain or status.
People at the memorial launched two new books about Kategaya. One contains stories from twenty important people who knew him well. The other book, written by his wife Joan, shares personal memories. Albert Mugumya edited these books and asked everyone to write down their experiences for future kids to read. He also introduced children whose parents belonged to the Uganda People's Movement long ago.
Vice President Jessica Alupo described Kategaya as someone who truly loved Africa and Uganda. She praised how honestly he served the country throughout his career. She remembered times when Kategaya helped guide important government meetings that created excellent plans for Uganda. Everyone gathered that day to celebrate all the good things Kategaya accomplished during his life.
Joan Kategaya talked about how God helped her family through hard times after her husband died. She feels thankful for divine protection during every difficult season since losing him. She expressed gratitude toward friends and relatives who supported them continuously. Joan currently works as a Senior Presidential Advisor helping veterans across the country.
