Museveni Opens New Flyover to Ease Kampala Traffic

President Museveni cut the ribbon yesterday at the Kampala Flyover Lot 1, adding major improvements to city roads. He asked people not to throw trash near the roads, especially plastic bags that might block water flow. He wants KCCA police to use cameras around town for catching anybody who dumps garbage by these new roads.

The Works Ministry gave control of these roads to Kampala Capital City Authority staff members, who must keep everything working properly. Japan paid $200 million through its International Cooperation Agency to build everything since 2019. These improvements should help cars move faster through busy parts of the city without waiting for hours.

The project built many useful things around Kampala, including the main Clock Tower Flyover, plus walking bridges at Shoprite and Kibuli. Workers also made an underpass at Nsambya, stronger roads throughout the area, five places with traffic lights, better drainage, street lamps, and nine frames that hold traffic signals above drivers.

Justus Akankwasa from KCCA promised his team would take good care of these structures for the next 100 years. People have already seen problems start, though—street sellers occupy walking paths beside new roads, thieves steal steps from manholes, and motorcycle taxis zoom dangerously through areas meant for careful driving.

Stephen Kitonsa from the Ministry asked everyone to teach others about protecting these expensive improvements. Motorcycle riders must follow traffic rules or face punishment from police officers. Hideshi Yamashita, representing Japan, emphasized that building fancy roads matters less than maintaining them properly afterward. He believes these changes will help Uganda grow economically if people treat them with respect.

The flyover project makes driving easier, reduces traffic jams, and creates safer streets for everyone. It connects perfectly with Uganda's big plans for better cities and less poverty across the country. Proper care ensures these benefits last for generations instead of falling apart after just a few years.
