Mutharika surges in Malawi tally, Chakwera trails badly

Malawi's Electoral Commission announced preliminary presidential election outcomes from thirteen districts across the nation. Former President Peter Mutharika commands a substantial lead with 501,897 votes representing 61.6 percent of valid ballots cast. Current President Lazarus Chakwera trails significantly with 210,137 votes at 25.8 percent, while Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement holds third position with 49,733 votes at 6.1 percent. Additional candidates received minimal support, totaling 52,218 votes combined.

District results demonstrate Mutharika's widespread appeal throughout multiple regions. Mulanje District provided its strongest showing with 207,596 votes compared to Chakwera's 3,195 and Kabambe's 2,579. Vote counting continues across the remaining constituencies as election officials verify tallies. The commission maintains transparency by releasing verified district totals in a progressive manner. Early projections suggest Mutharika approaches a decisive victory over the incumbent president, potentially securing more than fifty-six percent of total valid votes when final results emerge.
