A group of ten armed individuals, who were impersonating an anti-illegal mining task force, has been apprehended in the Western North Region. The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operation Secretariat captured the suspects in the Nyankamam-Armoyi forest located in the Aowin Municipality.
The group had allegedly been extorting money from illegal miners while falsely claiming to have affiliations with the Aowin Paramount Chief. Their activities were indirectly supporting unlawful mining operations. During the arrest, personnel seized the suspects' weapons and talismans.
Authorities now hold the individuals in custody. They are scheduled to be transferred to the Ghana Police Service for a full investigation and subsequent legal prosecution.
