Namibian Chiefs Demand Genocide Justice From Germany

Chief Gaob Immanuel |Gaseb leads the Council of Traditional Leaders and spoke at Wednesday's Genocide Remembrance Day ceremony. He asked traditional authorities and affected communities to work together during talks with Germany about past crimes. German colonial forces killed more than 100,000 Ovaherero and Nama people between 1904 and 1908. The massacres involved mass murder, rape, forced slavery and stealing land from local tribes. Namibia and Germany have discussed these historical atrocities since 2013.

The chief wants all traditional leaders and community members to support the genocide negotiations as one united group. He praised the Namibian government for keeping peace during the difficult discussions with German officials. |Gaseb said he never expected to see a genocide remembrance day happen during his lifetime. He believes the government should continue pursuing these talks until reaching a peaceful solution. The leader asked affected communities to stay strong and support their representatives.

Vice President Lucia Witbooi attended the commemoration with government officials and traditional leaders from across the country. She said the remembrance day shows Namibia's commitment to peace, stability and justice for all citizens. The event teaches young people about their ancestors' strength during terrible times. The ceremony helps bring different communities together as one nation. Witbooi believes remembering this painful history prevents similar tragedies from happening again.
