Nepal's Gen-Z revolt topples PM KP Sharma Oli

Political turmoil struck Nepal as citizens forced regime change through massive demonstrations. Youth protesters initially responded to government restrictions on 26 social media platforms after companies missed registration deadlines. The movement rapidly expanded beyond digital access issues to address systemic problems. Demonstrators demanded answers to endemic corruption, administrative failures, and economic inequality, which led to mass emigration. Public anger targeted the wealthy elite who displayed lavish lifestyles while ordinary people struggled.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stepped down on September 10 following intense pressure from protesters and political opponents. Multiple cabinet ministers resigned before Oli's departure as the crisis escalated throughout the country. The International Centre for Peace Studies identified Nepal as part of a regional trend following similar upheavals in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Sushila Karki assumed interim leadership with responsibilities to restore stability and prepare for the March 2026 elections. The new administration faces the challenge of rebuilding public confidence and implementing meaningful reforms.
