Nigeria dethrones US for 2025 WESPAC title in Accra

Nigeria captured the Best Country title at the 2025 WESPAC World Scrabble Championship held in Accra, dethroning the United States after assembling 350 victories and maintaining a 54.7 percent success rate across the competition. The 15-member squad, featuring standout performances from Oluwatimilehin Doko and teammates Abdulmumin Jimoh, Tega Okiemute, Godwin Victor, and captain Rex Ogbakpa, accumulated a cumulative points spread exceeding 8,975 to reverse their narrow defeat to the Americans two years earlier in Las Vegas.

Host nation Ghana secured second position ahead of Kenya, with Stanley Ubiedi leading the effort by finishing 13th globally with 20 wins and a plus-739 spread. Doko claimed fifth place worldwide following a 21-win campaign that produced 1,395 points, marking one of the strongest African showings in tournament history. Five Nigerian competitors placed within the top 20 individual rankings as Canada's Adam Logan defeated Nigel Richards 4-2 in the championship final.
